What is X?

By: Elaine Murray

X stands for the unknown.

  • In algebra, we are taught to let the unknown quantity = "x."
  • When x-rays were first discovered, the rays were not fully understood, so they became "x" rays. The name sticks to this day.
  • When people did not know how to write their name, they were permitted to sign with an "x" provided it was witnessed. Today, when we are asked to fill out any of a multitude of forms which x-ist in the world of business, they still mark the signature spot with an "x" and tell you to sign.

Perhaps the form of the X is a throw back to the ancient runic symbol where "x" indicates a partnership of some sort...either in business or in love.

XP are the first two letters in the Greek word for "Khristos," thus X has become a symbol or emblem for Christ. Hurrah for X-mas holidays!

And as a child (or adult), did you not sign your mother's day cards with XX's and OOO's?
