Power Animals

By: Elaine Murray

Power Animals are spirit animals that work with human beings to help their spiritual growth.

Ancient myths and stories speak of a time when there were no boundaries between animals and humans. If we listen closely, they speak to us today as well. Spirit animals touch a primal part of our heart and soul. They can be our teachers, protectors or companions. The lessons they teach, help us to respect not only them... but ourselves. Animals are not the domain of one society; all peoples are enriched by them. When we fail to respect nature and our ultimate connection to it; we fail to respect aspects of our own self.

In the past, shamans, priests and priestesses were the keepers of the sacred knowledge. They wore skins and masks in rituals they performed to assist them in coming face to face with the spirit worlds. Some people today can communicate telepathically with animals.

Nature Totems help us understand how the spiritual is manifesting within our natural life. A totem is any natural object, being, or animal whose energy we feel closely associated with. When we pay attention to a Nature Totem, we are honouring the essence that lies behind it. As we open up and attune to that essence, we can understand our own life circumstances more clearly. We can share in its power or "medicine." So... Power Animals or Nature Totems are symbols of specific kinds of energy we can use in our life.

Water is an ancient symbol for the astral plane. Whales in particular are a popular totem.

Spirit guides often take the form of an animal to teach their lessons.

Q. How can you identify your personal Power Animal or Totem?
  • through creative imagination
  • by paying attention to a bird or animal that has always fascinated you
  • noting which animals you see most frequently when driving, or out in nature
  • being aware of which animal frightens you. (This animal may signify something you must come to terms with.)
  • through dreams, especially if you dream of a recurring animal
  • through meditation. Often Power Animals will reveal themselves to you during a meditation

You will find your greatest success if the animal comes to you. Your Power Animal can be with you for a day, a cycle, or your entire life. You are not limited to just one, but may have several, and different ones for different periods of your life.

I am particularly drawn to the jaguar. When I created my special room during a meditation class, I draped a leopard skin or jaguar skin over my imaginary chair. I have a large picture of a jaguar hanging over my sofa. My friend has a black panther who is with her at all times and often warns her when she is around people who cannot be trusted.

An excellent book to help you with your interpretation of your Power Animal is: Animal-speak: the Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small by Ted Andrews.
